DIY Headboard

While many people appreciate the look of an upholstered headboard and bed, few know that it can be a pretty simple Do-It-Yourself project. The appeal is that the fabric chosen can be one-of-a-kind, durable, and an expression of the owner’s personality. Not to mention that a soft headboard is great for children, especially those who enjoy jumping on their beds… and therefore bumping their heads.

I created a simple rectangular-shaped headboard for a little boy’s bedroom. In this particular case, the duvet cover was already purchased so I pulled from the colors in it and found a beautiful geometric patterned fabric that echoed the blues and greens.
The bed was the FJELLSE from Ikea and only $39. I painted the sides and legs in glossy white paint. Then I nailed a piece of plywood to the back of the bed since the current headboard was much too low. In this case, I had to cut and glue foam to fit and cover every possible crevice this headboard had in order to make it a smooth surface. Sometimes headboards are already flat and will be easier to pad with foam.

Once the headboard was completely padded with foam, I covered it with a thinner foam mousse and stapled it. You will need to use a professional heavy-duty stapler, not the office kind.
Finally, I smoothed out the fabric over the headboard and decided where it would go. This is important when you have patterned fabric, in order to make sure it is centered.

Once that was done, I stapled it tightly to the bottom and the back, making sure that the corners were pleated and pulled tightly.
And voila! A custom-looking headboard that is extremely budget and children friendly and took little time to make.
